Pastoral Care and Student Support Services: Building Resilient & Well-Grounded Students

Students flourish in a nurturing and supportive environment

All BISR learners can expect to experience high quality learning opportunities and a sense of well-being which enables them to flourish and be proud of their contributions and achievements. Some learners’ individual needs may impact their access to learning physically, emotionally or academically. Our approach to supporting students seeks to reduce barriers to participation and to provide appropriate support across our three pillars: Learning, Enrichment and Well-being.

BISR caters for individual needs which can be largely met within a mainstream classroom and supported by class teachers and teaching assistants. Where more specialist intervention is needed, this is provided by our team of highly experienced Student Services professionals. The team comprises Counsellors, specialist English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers, Support for Learning teachers, an Educational Psychologist and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and Intensive Needs Support Assistants (INSAs).

We advocate a collaborative approach to meeting the needs of our students with additional learning needs (SEND), who are multilingual learners (EAL), who have physical and/or sensory needs and students experiencing social and emotional challenges. Student Services works collaboratively with Admissions, Pastoral Teams, class and subject teachers to provide comprehensive support.

Please refer to our Admissions pages for further information on making an application for a student with any additional needs.
ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE & SUPPORT FOR LEARNING

EAL and Support for Learning provision includes in-class support, individual or small group intervention or regular lessons with our specialist teachers. Some of our students access support for a limited period of time whilst others do so on a regular basis throughout their time with us. A small number of students require daily, individualised and intensive support. This level of support is allocated after consultation with teachers, families and the school’s leadership teams. Additional charges are made for this level of support.

EAL and Support for Learning colleagues promote working in partnership with parents. Developing a supportive, honest and open relationship between school and family benefits all students. Our team will keep you informed regarding requests for support, learning plan reviews and routine interventions. Support is provided for parents through regular Parent Forums and workshops. Our specialist teachers are available at formal Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs) and Student Led Conferences (SLCs).

COUNSELLING

Our Counsellors offer a specialised support service to help individuals understand themselves and others, explore relationships, develop coping strategies, and assist with specific issues such as conflict resolution, communication, problem solving, and decision making. This role closely complements the pastoral roles of the class teacher, tutor and head of year, and works in close partnership with the Safeguarding Team. School counselling provides brief interventions that aim to help clear pathways to learning and are, as far as possible, goal centered.

Counsellors work to professional confidentiality standards. Conversations are private and confidentiality would only be breached in case of risk. It is important to recognise that students can only benefit from counselling if they choose this option and are invested in the process. It is the counsellor’s responsibility to ensure that the student’s rights to autonomy are respected in this process. Parental approval is required for primary students to attend counselling, but using the Gillick Competency and Fraser Guidelines (1982), older students may make this choice for themselves.

PEER LISTENERS

Peer listeners at BISR.

We run a Peer Listener programme at Al Hamra, Al Waha and our DQ campuses. Peer listeners are students who volunteer for this role and are trained to provide support and a listening ear to other students. They are, of course, not counsellors or therapists, but rather students who have been selected and trained to offer empathy, understanding, and a safe space for their peers to talk about their problems or concerns.

Safeguarding

The Well-being of Our Diverse Community is Prioritised in All We Do

Keeping your children safe at all times

At BISR, safeguarding means protecting individuals from harm while fostering a safe, inclusive environment. Guided by international best practices and local cultural context, BISR ensures the well-being of its diverse community is prioritised in all operations.

Led by Nivedita Carrington, Vice Principal: Pastoral and Safeguarding, and Gary Wambeek, Safeguarding Lead, the school has implemented a robust framework aligned with global safeguarding principles. Policies and practices are designed to prevent harm, empower students, and address concerns swiftly.

Safeguarding team leadership has driven enhancements such as partnerships with Safeguarding Alliance, Child Safeguarding, Cobis and BSME, implemented a reliable incident reporting system, and effective feedback channels that triage our students to the care that is provided.

Recognising the importance of community involvement, BISR maintains open communication with families through parental workshops that help shape safeguarding initiatives. This collaborative approach ensures all voices are valued and contributes to a stronger safeguarding culture.
