Value-added in education
We recognise the enormous pressure on young people to excel in their exams so, at BISR, we place a big emphasis on the support and care we offer all of our students to help them succeed.
We provide so much in terms of value added teaching and learning and continually encourage our students to pursue their interests and passions.
What is “value-added”? |

Value added/progress is a model which calculates the amount of progress made by pupils between key stages compared to the average of their statistical peers. In the context of GCSEs and A-Levels, "value added" refers to the progress a student makes between two points in their education, typically measured by comparing their performance at the end of Key Stage 4 (GCSEs) with their performance at the end of Key Stage 5 (A-Levels). Essentially, it's a way of measuring how much a school has helped a student to improve. Throughout their school journey, we measure students’ progress against Cognitive Ability Test (CAT) scores, and use an external baseline to benchmark their progress. Data shows that students at BISR achieve better scores on average than their counterparts in the UK. A greater percentage of our students achieve better grades than expected. For example, the latest data analysis shows our students achieve a grade per subject better at GCSE and 2 grades better across the suite of A-Level subjects they study. |
Why is value-added important? |
Value-added measures the progress that students make and allows for fairer comparison between schools as it takes into account the different starting points of students. Using this method allows us to use data to identify patterns, strengths and weaknesses and address them accordingly. This data drives school improvement plans and strategies and is useful for staff and parents alike. Overall, value added is a useful tool for measuring educational progress, but it should of course be used in conjunction with other measures to provide a more comprehensive picture of a school. |

University destinations
All our students are fully supported by the Head of Sixth Form, the Careers and Higher Education Advisor, their tutor and teachers during the Futures programme, where they apply to their chosen universities.
