British International School Riyadh is proud to recognise Kamar El Khatib, named one of the inaugural recipients of the Lightkeeper Award by Angie Browne of Being Luminary.

Introduced at the end of the last academic year, the Lightkeeper Award is a regional accolade designed to honor educators who champion DEI initiatives alongside their full-time school commitments. Out of a wide network of schools and educators, Kamar was selected as one of six inaugural awardees.

Driving Meaningful DEI Progress
While broader institutional recognitions, such as the Excellence in Equity Award, celebrate whole-school progress, the Lightkeeper Award focuses on individual leadership. It highlights the individuals driving sustained change behind the scenes.

At BISR, Kamar has served as a central force for equity and inclusion by:

  • Leading Continuous Professional Learning: Actively participating in deep-learning DEI sessions to bring updated practices and frameworks back to the school community.
  • Facilitating Community Dialogue: Creating open spaces for students, staff, and leadership to engage in critical conversations around equity and representation.
  • Embedding Inclusion into Daily Life: Integrating DEI principles into everyday school culture while balancing her primary duties as an educator.

Building a More Inclusive Future
Systemic change in education relies on dedicated leadership. By embedding equity into everyday practices, educators like Kamar help ensure that BISR remains an environment where every student and staff member feels valued, respected, and supported.

BISR extends its congratulations to Kamar El Khatib and her fellow inaugural awardees across the region for their leadership and commitment to advancing equity in education.
