Music

In the Primary School, we believe that music education should engage and inspire our young students to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, with the aim of increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Through the music curriculum, our children develop their understanding, make musical judgments, apply their new learning, develop their aural memory, express themselves physically, emotionally and through discussion and create their own musical ideas. Each individual’s personal interest is captured and nurtured. The music curriculum is well-resourced with a wide range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments and resources from all around the world. Technology is used regularly, for quizzing on music theory to composition of new and original pieces.

Our Music curriculum in Foundation Stage follows the Expressive Arts guidance in the Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. The children learn to sing a wide variety of songs, make music and dance. Our music curriculum in Years 1 to 6 focuses on the Elements of Music: Pulse and Rhythm, Pitch, Music and Movement, Creative Composing, Singing, Performing and Listening.

There are many opportunities, over the course of the year, to showcase and celebrate music within, across and beyond the curriculum. Instrumental music lessons are available for students who wish to study a particular instrument, including ABRSM examinations. Music plays a central role in assemblies and larger prestigious events and concerts.
